Midweek Pick Me Up: Never Give Up

This episode is inspired from a story by a Hall of Fame basketball coach. The power of belief and never giving up on our students matters. We might not always see the effects of our belief right away, but it makes a difference.
What's going on everybody, I hope this finds you striving and thriving and doing absolutely amazing. Had an awesome phone conversation with a former mentor. He was the head basketball coach for the basketball team that I used to work with. And we had coached together for 14 years. And we were talking and we were rehashing old times, and he was telling me now this gentleman is super competitive. He has been inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame. He's the all time winningest basketball coach in Western New York, he's been to the Final Four, seven times, he has two state championships. So he has a pretty solid resume. But he said as much as he liked winning. For him, it was more about building relationships. And he was telling me the story about a player that had come before I joined his coaching staff. And he said this player had been really good. He was an excellent player. But he always pushed back. He was hard to coach, he always told the line. And he was always making it extremely difficult. And he said, This player goes on he graduates. And years later, he's in his office, he the phone rings, he picks it up. And it's the main office saying that this young man is here to see him. So this young man comes, and he sits down in the office with my coach. And he said, Coach, I just want to thank you. He said, You always believed in me, you never turned your back on me. You always held me accountable, you're always there for me. And he said, I wouldn't be where I'm at today. If it wasn't for you. There are students that are going to push back, there's going to be students that need that level of accountability, that are going to make things difficult. But that power of showing up for them. That power of being a person who holds them accountable. And that power of being that person that believes in them. That cheers them on that season them what they can't see in themselves, and never turns their back on them. That matters. And every single day, we show up and we plant seeds. And we may not see those seeds take root. We may never see those seeds blossom. But our words, what we do, how we show up. It all matters. The students, they're always going to have people in their life. They're going to tell them who they think they are, who they think they're not. But very few of them will have people in their life that are going to be there. And they're going to tell them how much they believe in them. They're going to be there to show them who they can become the gifts they have the greatness within them. Let's give them that gift. We've been blessed with another sunrise. Have an awesome day.
