The To Be List

The To Be List

As educators we have mastered the art of the to do list. We have lists for everything and we often consider it a good day if we can cross off everything from the list. What if we crossed off the "to do" list and created a "to be" list.  This episode explores a "to be" list and the power that it can have.

I'm Brian Martin, a second grade teacher who find so much joy and fulfillment in what I do. Being in the classroom for almost 20 years, I know all about the time, effort and energy that you are continuously pouring into those you serve. That's why each week, I'm going to bring you an inspiring message to give you a little joy, and help fill your cup back up. Thank you for being here. And welcome to the teaching champions podcast. What's going on everybody, I hope this finds you striving and thriving and doing absolutely amazing. Today, we're going to be talking about those amazing, those magical, those never ending to do lists. Now, if you're part of the teaching community, then there's no doubt in my mind that you're a whiz at to do lists. They keep us organized, they keep us directed, they keep us intentional with everything that we need to do. I was reading an article the other day. And it was a really interesting take on the to do list. And the author of the article said, instead of having a to do list, we should have a to be list. And think about that for a second. We often judge the effectiveness of our day, if we can cross off the different items on the to do list, because it feels good, and feels like we accomplish something. But what if we judge the effectiveness of our day, not by how many things we cross off a list. But based off of what version of ourselves showed up for the world that day? What have you took that same direction, that same intentionality and take it away from what you need to get done. And put it more on who you need to be. Because if who you need to be shows up those other items, they're going to get done. You see if we started our day off with intentionality, and said, I'm going to be a little bit more positive. Or I'm going to be a little bit more inviting, more daring, more adventurous today. Maybe I need to be a little more curious, or Kinder forgiving. Or maybe I need to be more confident to face the world today. Think about the difference that would make. Take time and think how you need to show up for your students today. Different days, different moments, different individuals, they need different things from us. So start by asking yourself, in order for me to have that most impact. What version of me needs to show up today? Think about what that looks like. We can say I need to be more patient. But what does that look like? I need to be more positive, more empathetic. One of those look like picture in your mind. See yourself being more positive. What are you doing? Feel it? What does it feel like? And if we can see it, and we can feel it, then it's going to help us become it. Now this is just a little food for thought, but thick. At the end of the day, if you lay your head down on the pillow, then you close your eyes. And you know, who showed up for the world that day was the best version of yourself for your family. That the person who showed up for your students who showed up for those around you was the person that you wanted and needed to show up. Then you can close your eyes. And you can rest peacefully because that person made a difference today. Thank you for being part of the teaching champions community. We support we encourage we lift each other up. And we're always is better together. My challenge for you this week. Take a little time. reflect and think not about who you need to be for your students, for your community, for your family. Think about who do you need to be for that person that you see in the mirror? Who do you need to be? See it, feel embody it and be it. Keep being amazing, my friend. And as we go out into this week, may you step into your strength may step into your shine, and let's build these champions up. Have a great week, everybody
