Episode 108 | The Elephant and the Rope: What’s Really Holding You Back?

In this powerful episode of the Lead with H.O.P.E. Podcast, Dr. Brandi Kelly explores a simple but transformational story about an elephant and a rope—and how it mirrors the invisible limits many leaders place on themselves.

Dr. Brandi Kelly: â So â this is a story that I came across a few weeks ago, and it really with me. And I hope it speaks to you as well. The story is about an elephant and a rope. A man was walking through a village when he noticed something that didn't really make sense. You'll walk away with greater self-awareness, practical next steps, and a clear vision for leading with confidence, purpose, and impact. The scheduling link is available in the show notes, or you can visit my website, sparcopeedu.com. Click on the button in the upper right-hand corner of the website. Don't let an old story determine your future. The rope may not be as strong as you think. Standing before him was a massive elephant. The animal was powerful, strong enough to uproot trees, move heavy loads, and break through barriers with ease. Now, this elephant was tied to a small wooden stake in the ground with nothing more than a thin rope around his leg. The man stopped and he stared, and he thought, surely this elephant could break free in seconds. Curious.
Brandi Kelly: A big thank you to Craig Williams and Convissary for being a legacy sponsor of this podcast And for investing in stories that matter because when we share our stories with clarity and hope, real change happens.
Dr. Brandi Kelly: He approached the trainer and he asked, Why doesn't the elephant break the rope and run away? The trainer simply smiled. He explained, When the elephant was young, this rope was strong enough to hold him. He said, as a baby elephant, he tried again and again to break free. He pulled, he tugged, he strained, he fought with everything that he had. But no matter how hard he tried, So take the first step today and schedule that complementary leadership clarity assessment and let's start building your system of hope together. The elephant couldn't escape. So eventually he just stopped trying. The trainer looked at the elephant and he said, Now he's strong enough to break the rope. But he still believes he can't. The man stood silently, reflecting on what he had just heard. The elephant wasn't trapped by the rope, he was trapped by belief. That story Is not really about an elephant. It's about you and it's about me. How many times have you allowed an old failure to define what's possible for your future? Maybe you tried to lead a change and you faced resistance. Or maybe you applied for a position that you didn't get. Maybe you launched an idea and it failed. Maybe you've convinced yourself that you're not confident enough. You're not smart enough, experienced enough, or capable enough. And at some point, many of us have stopped pulling on that rope. Not because we can't succeed, but because we have convinced ourselves that we couldn't. You know, one of the greatest lessons I've learned in leadership is this: past experiences create our beliefs. Beliefs create our behaviors. And our behaviors create results. If you believe you're stuck, you're gonna stop trying. If you believe growth is possible, you're gonna keep moving forward. The rope that holds us back is often invisible. It's fear, it's self-doubt, it's those limiting beliefs. It's the story we tell ourselves about who we are and what we're capable of becoming. Now here's the good news. Beliefs can be challenged. Beliefs can be rewritten. Beliefs can change. The moment that you realize that that rope isn't as strong as you thought, everything changes. this is exactly why I created the system of hope. Hope is not wishful thinking. Hope Is believing that your future can be better than your present and that you have the power to influence that future. Hope reminds us to build habits that support growth. Optimistic outlook that focuses on possibilities instead of limitations. Purpose that gives meaning to our work. Excellence that helps us become the best version of ourselves. When we embrace hope, we stop living according to those old beliefs and we start living according to new possibilities.
